Walmart awards local grants through the Spark Good Local Grants program, and each award is between $250 and $5,000. Applications run in three cycles a year, published for Walmart fiscal 2027 as February 1 to April 15, May 1 to July 15 and August 1 to November 30. You do not apply to Walmart nationally: you apply to one specific store or Sam's Club, your organization has to serve the same area that facility serves, and you may hold a maximum of 25 applications in pending or approved status at any one time. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) public charities, government entities, K-12 public and nonprofit private schools, charter schools, colleges and universities, and faith based organizations running a community benefit project.
The name is the first thing to get right, because it changed and most of the pages ranking for this search did not. What people still call the Walmart community grant or the Walmart Foundation local grant is now administered as Spark Good Local Grants, and applications go through a Spark Good account verified by Deed, Walmart's third party verification provider. If you are searching for an application portal under the old name, that is why you keep landing on dead links.

How much is the Walmart community grant?
Each Spark Good Local Grant is between $250 and $5,000. There is no single headline figure because the amount is set by the facility against what you asked for, so the number you request matters. A great many searches for this program use the phrase "$5,000 Walmart grant", and $5,000 is the ceiling rather than the default. Ask for a specific, costed item near the top of that range if the project genuinely costs that, and ask for less if it does not, because a request tied to a real quote reads better than a round number with nothing behind it.
The practical ceiling for an organization is higher than $5,000, though, and this is the part most write ups miss. Because you apply per facility and may hold up to 25 applications at once, a nonprofit serving a metro area with eight nearby stores and clubs can legitimately have eight live requests. They are separate decisions made by separate facilities. That is how the program is designed to work, not a loophole.
How do I apply for a Walmart grant?
Create a Spark Good account and complete verification through Deed first, then apply to a named facility inside an open cycle. Verification is the step that costs organizations a season, because it is checked against IRS records and is not instant, and a cycle can close while you are still waiting. Do it in a quiet month. Once you are verified, the application itself is short: you identify the store, describe the project, name the amount, and tie the request to one of Walmart's published funding areas.
Before you start, put four documents in one folder: your IRS determination letter, your most recent financial statements, a one page budget for the specific project, and a short description of who you serve with real numbers. Most local nonprofits have the first and the last but not the middle two. If your books live in a spreadsheet or an accounting export, you can turn that export into board ready statements rather than formatting a balance sheet by hand the night before a deadline.
Who is eligible for a Walmart community grant?
The eligible list is broader than most corporate programs, which is the main reason this one is worth your time. Walmart accepts 501(c)(3) public charities holding current tax exempt status, government entities including federal agencies, state departments and political subdivisions, K-12 public and nonprofit private schools, charter schools, community and junior colleges, state and private colleges and universities, and churches and faith based organizations where the project delivers a community benefit.
The rule that actually filters applications is geographic rather than legal. You must serve the same service area that the facility you are asking serves. A regional nonprofit headquartered forty miles away, applying to a store because it is a large store, is applying to the wrong facility. Walmart also publishes funding exclusions covering organizations that deny service, membership or involvement on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, veteran or disability status.
Does Walmart give grants to schools?
Yes. Schools are named directly in the eligibility list, which is unusual and makes this one of the more accessible corporate programs for a PTA, a school foundation or a booster club. K-12 public schools, nonprofit private schools and charter schools all qualify, as do community and junior colleges and four year institutions. The projects that fit best are the concrete ones the funding areas already cover: a school garden or outdoor classroom under nature preservation, a food pantry or backpack program under healthier food access, a recycling or waste reduction program, or a community event that brings families into the building.
What a Walmart grant will not do for a school is cover recurring costs. It is a project award, capped at $5,000 and paid once, so it does not touch transportation, officials, stipends, entry fees or anything else that repeats every year. Those lines are normally carried by a mix of district budget, family fundraising and school sponsorship from local businesses, which renews annually in a way a grant cycle never does.
How many Walmart grants can one organization apply for?
You may hold a maximum of 25 applications in pending or approved status at any one time, and you cannot submit a second application to the same facility within the same fiscal year. Those two rules together are what make a store by store strategy sensible: list every Walmart store and Sam's Club whose service area overlaps yours, and treat each as its own funder with its own decision.
One detail worth knowing about the repeat rule. Walmart's fiscal year begins on February 1, which is also why Cycle 1 opens on February 1. So "the same fiscal year" means February through January, not January through December. A request declined by a store in January and a fresh request to that same store in February fall in two different fiscal years.
What does Walmart fund with local grants?
Six published areas: economic opportunity, nature preservation, waste reduction, healthier food access, disaster preparedness and community connection. In practice the strongest applications name one of those areas explicitly and then describe a physical, finishable thing inside it. A commercial refrigerator for a food pantry. Tools and raised beds for a community garden. Supplies for a disaster readiness drive. Equipment for a free community event.
Vague requests for general operating support do poorly, and that is consistent across every corporate giving program, not just this one. The pattern holds so reliably that it is worth planning around: corporate money buys things, and it does not pay for the year. The same is true across the rest of the companies that donate to nonprofits, where Home Depot pays in gift cards and Lowe's pays in a renovation rather than cash, and it is why organizations that rely on grants alone tend to be well equipped and short of cash at the same time.
Can a Walmart store sponsor my event instead of granting?
Local stores do support community events outside the grant program, through in kind product donations and local giving handled at the facility, and it is a reasonable ask to make of a store manager in person. But treat it as a separate conversation with a separate answer, and do not let it replace a sponsorship plan. The difference matters: a donation comes from a charitable budget, is one time and is restricted to a project, while a sponsorship comes from a marketing budget, buys named benefits such as banner placement, a program mention or a booth, and gets renewed when the sponsor gets what they paid for.
That is the honest strategy for most local organizations. Apply to your nearby facilities for the capital list you keep deferring, in the cycle that fits your project timing. Then sell sponsorship to the businesses whose customers are your people for the operating cost that no grant on this page will touch. If you run a youth program, the same split applies to the wider youth sports grants landscape, where the national funders award equipment and facility credits and local sponsors pay for the season. Publish your audience, your assets and your prices in one place, and a company with a marketing budget can decide without a meeting.
