FRC grants come from three places: named corporate foundation programs like the Gene Haas Foundation, which awards $3,000 to FIRST Robotics Competition teams and $2,000 to FTC teams, employee-mentor programs from companies like Boeing, John Deere and BAE Systems that require someone from the company on your team, and NASA, which has covered registration and a first Regional event for rookie, new veteran and year-two US teams. None of them will fund a season on their own. Season registration for 2026-2027 is $6,500 and most teams quote a working budget of $10,000 to $15,000, so grants are one column of the plan and sponsorship is the other.

The difference between a team that raises its budget and one that scrambles in January is almost never effort. It is calendar discipline. Sponsors will take a meeting in November if you ask in November. Grants will not. Every program below has a fixed date, and once it passes, that money is gone for the season no matter how good your team is. So the first thing to do in August is not to write a sponsorship letter. It is to put these dates on one calendar and assign each one to a named student or mentor.

These are the programs FIRST lists for individual teams. Amounts and eligibility are as published; deadlines move year to year, so confirm each on the funder site before you build a plan on it. Dates below are for the 2026-2027 season as listed in August 2026.

Read that table for pattern, not just for dates. Most of these are not open competitions. Boeing, John Deere, BAE Systems, Boston Scientific and Dow all gate on a company relationship: an employee mentor, or a site near your school. That changes the work. Finding a grant is not a search problem, it is a recruiting problem. If a parent on your team works at one of these companies and is willing to be listed as a mentor, you have just unlocked a funding source no amount of application writing would have reached.

What is the Gene Haas Foundation grant?

It is the most accessible named grant in FIRST, because it does not require an employee mentor or a specific zip code. The Gene Haas Foundation awards $3,000 to FIRST Robotics Competition teams and $2,000 to FIRST Tech Challenge teams, with priority given to teams that design and build using CNC machining. Applications for the 2026-2027 season have been accepted since May 1, 2026 through the foundation application portal.

One restriction catches teams out. Grant funds cannot be spent on anything Haas Automation makes or a Haas Factory Outlet sells, including Haas Tooling and service calls. Budget the money against registration, raw stock, non-Haas tooling, machined parts or travel instead, and say so in the application. Teams that show a specific spend plan tied to a real invoice read better than teams that write about inspiring students.

What does the NASA FRC grant cover?

NASA has run a robotics grant aimed squarely at the hardest years, covering season registration and a first Regional event for rookie, new veteran and year-two teams in the United States. That is meaningful, because registration is the single largest fixed line in an FRC budget. For the 2025-2026 season the application closed on September 30, 2025. FIRST has not yet listed a 2026-2027 NASA cycle on its team grant page as of August 2026, so if your team is in its first three years, check the FIRST team grant opportunities page and the NASA Robotics Alliance Project directly rather than assuming the cycle repeats on the same date.

How much money does an FRC team actually need?

Start with the fees you cannot negotiate, because they are the numbers a grant application and a sponsor conversation both hang on.

Teams commonly describe a working season budget of $10,000 to $15,000, and teams that travel to Championship report far more. Put your own version of this table on one page with the two payment dates on it. That page does more work than any letter, because it converts a vague request into a specific number with a deadline attached, and both grant reviewers and corporate givers respond to specificity. It is also the document that makes the case for FRC sponsorship packages, since the gap between what grants cover and what the season costs is exactly what a sponsor is being asked to close.

How do you apply for an FRC grant?

Nearly all of these run through an online form on the funder site rather than through FIRST, and most ask for the same handful of things: your team number and program, the school or nonprofit you operate under, a season budget, what specifically you would spend the money on, and how many students the team serves. Prepare those once in August and reuse them. The teams that apply to six programs and the teams that apply to one are usually separated by whether the budget document already existed.

Two details are worth getting right before you submit anything. First, know what entity you operate under, because almost every form asks. A team run through a school, a church or another IRS-recognized nonprofit generally operates under that organization recognition. Teams independent of any such organization should pursue their own 501(c)(3) status, which makes donations deductible as charitable contributions and reassures reviewers that the team keeps real books. Second, decide how you will document spending. Most funders expect some report on how the money was used, and reconstructing that in June from a shoebox is miserable. Photograph every receipt as it happens and keep it categorized against the budget line it belongs to, so the report at the end of the season takes an afternoon instead of a week.

What grants are available for robotics teams outside FIRST programs?

Look local before you look national. School district education foundations, city and county STEM or workforce development funds, community foundations, and the charitable arms of regional employers all fund robotics, and they compete with far fewer applicants than a national program. Many state manufacturing associations and workforce boards also fund student technical programs directly, because a robotics team is a visible answer to a skilled trades shortage they are already trying to solve. Ask your district grants coordinator what the school has applied for before, since that relationship is often already open.

Can a robotics team get a grant without 501(c)(3) status?

Usually yes. Most FIRST-listed programs accept teams operating under a school or another recognized nonprofit, and that covers the majority of FRC teams. What matters to a funder is that there is a real organization that can receive and account for the money, not that the team itself holds a determination letter. Independent teams with no such umbrella are the ones that should pursue their own recognition, both to widen the pool of grants they qualify for and to make direct donations deductible for the giver.

Why grants alone will not fund your season

Add up the realistic best case. A $3,000 Gene Haas grant plus a $1,500 Arconic grant is $4,500 against a $6,500 registration invoice, and that assumes you win both. Most teams win one or none in a given year. Grants are lumpy, competitive and calendar-bound, and the teams that depend on them are the teams that have a crisis every February.

The stable teams treat grants as the floor and sponsorship as the structure. Sponsorship is renewable in a way grants are not: a manufacturer that gets a logo on the robot, a plant tour with the students and a season recap in April will very often renew in September without a new application. It also scales with what your team can offer, and an FRC team can offer something no other youth program can, which is direct access to high school students who already know CAD, wiring and machining, to employers who cannot fill those roles. That is why the pitch works better as a recruiting conversation than a charity one. If you are building that side of the plan, start with how first robotics sponsorship levels are usually structured and priced, then work through how to ask for sponsorship so the first approach lands with the right person.

It is worth telling companies the tax picture plainly too, because many assume a sponsorship only counts if the team is a charity. In most cases a business that receives logo placement and recognition deducts the payment as an ordinary advertising expense rather than a charitable contribution, which usually works out better for them and does not depend on the team holding 501(c)(3) status. Apply to Gene Haas, because it is open now and does not gate on geography. Check whether any parent or mentor works at Boeing, John Deere, BAE Systems, Boston Scientific or Dow, because that single fact unlocks the employee-mentor programs. If your team is in its first three years, watch for the NASA cycle, which covers the largest line in your budget. Then stop treating grants as the plan. Build the one page budget, set your sponsorship levels, and spend September and October in front of the engineering employers within driving distance of your school, because that is the money that renews.
